Major League Baseball trade rumors: Nationals acquire Kelvin Herrera

The Nationals traded for Royals closer Kelvin Herrera Monday, the teams announced. Third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez, outfielder Blake Perkins and right-handed pitcher Yohanse Morel are headed to Kansas City, which is seeking to rebuild after its quick decline since winning the 2015 World Series over the Mets. More generally, the Nationals are all-in on trying to make it deep into the postseason in Bryce Harper's walk year, so don't be surprised if GM Mike Rizzo makes additional moves before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

Herrera has been excellent so far this season for Kansas City, posting a 1.05 ERA and saving 14 games in 27 appearances. Herrera figures to form a formidable lefty-righty combo with current Nats closer Sean Doolittle.

The Nationals came into Monday at 38-31, three games behind the Atlanta Braves for first in the NL East and just a game ahead of the Phillies.

Though they gave up three players to acquire Herrera, the Nationals were able to avoid giving up any of their elite prospects, such as Juan Soto, Victor Robles or Carter Kieboom.
