Controversial rap star XXXTentacion killed in Florida

XXXTentacion, the troubled 20-year-old rapper whose bleak, self-released rhymes propelled him to the top of the United States chart this year, was shot dead Monday in Florida, authorities said.

This afternoon, TMZ reported that the controversial rapper (born Jaseh Onfroy) was shot in South Florida near Deerfield Beach after a gunman approached his vehicle. Sheriff's Department later confirmed XXXTentacion died, according to TMZ.

A source confirms to Variety that the rapper, whose real name is Jahseh Onfroy, has been critically wounded.

Deputies say the shooting happened at 3671 N. Dixie Hwy, at a popular motorcycle shop called RIVA Motorsports. He was 20 years old.

Earlier the local Broward Sheriff's Office confirmed that it is was "working an incident regarding a shooting" next to a motorcycle dealership. At the time of his death he was awaiting trial for domestic violence against a pregnant ex-girlfriend. His previous album, "17", reached No. 2 a year ago.

"XXXTentacion's latest album "?" debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart when it was released in March 2018.

Onfroy began rapping at age 15 and broke onto the scene in 2017 with his single "Look at Me".

Soon after a pregnancy test came out positive, the then girlfriend said that the rapper beat her for 15 minutes, injuring her so badly that she lost vision and vomited.
