'Congress passed the law that it is a crime to enter this country illegally.

In 2005, he launched Operation Streamline, a program along a stretch of the border in Texas that referred all unlawful entrants for criminal prosecution, imprisoning them and expediting assembly-line-style trials geared toward quickly deporting them.

"As a mother, as a Catholic, as somebody who has got a conscience ..."

It further says: "To pretend that separated children do not grow up with the shrapnel of this traumatic experience embedded in their minds is to disregard everything we know about child development, the brain, and trauma".

A draft of a Republican bill in the House presented to lawmakers on Thursday proposes a solution to the situation by allowing children to be kept in detention with their parents - overturning the 1997 Flores agreement that prevents illegal immigrant children from being held in custody for long periods.

Meanwhile a top White House adviser is trying to distance the Trump administration from responsibility for a jump in the number of migrant children being separated from their parents by American authorities at the US-Mexico border. In return, Trump offered a path to citizenship for roughly 1.8 million "DREAMers" who came illegally to the United States children. Bannon told ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl in an exclusive interview on "This Week" Sunday.

"I'd like to say it's un-American, but it's happening right now in America".

Melania Trump said the USA needs to "govern with heart".

The Department of Homeland Security said Friday that almost 2,000 children have been placed into shelters over a six-week period.

'President Trump could stop this policy with a phone call, ' he said. 'If he can't [acknowledge] that, I'll go tell him 'if you don't like families being supported, you can tell DHS to stop doing it'. "It's all of the above", Conway said. He blames Democrats for a policy that he and his administration must be forced to wholly own.

"I hate children being taken away".

"I hate the children being taken away", Trump told reporters Friday.

Democrats have introduced legislation to force Trump's hand. Asylum-seekers who go to official crossings are not separated from families, except in specific circumstances. But Collins said Sunday morning that the numbers may be higher.

On Twitter, Trump addressed what he specifically wants in new legislation including "full funding for the Wall;" an end to a diversity visa lottery and certain categories of family-based migration; and a shift toward "merit based immigration" for skilled workers.

In an election year in which Democrats appear to have an advantage on voter enthusiasm, Republicans can ill afford to alienate any voters this fall, particularly their most passionate supporters.
