Other Polestar Engineered-specific cues include black exhaust tips, gold seatbelt straps, and the requisite Polestar badging.

Volvo Cars, the premium auto maker, is launching a new upgraded electrified performance offer called Polestar Engineered, specifically developed for its new 60 Series T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid cars. It's a complete offer, applying Polestar's performance know-how to the car's wheels, brakes and suspension as well.

I'm not sure about Volvo's plans to go fully electric, but anytime you can get nearly 500 pound-feet from just two litres, sign me up.

Polestar Engineered parts will be available for the imminent new S60 first, and then the V60 and XC60 next year.

Fine-tuning of the engine's control unit increases the S60 electrified T8 Twin Engine output to 415hp* combined, with 670Nm of torque - the standard T8 Twin Engine delivers 400hp* and 640Nm combined. The ECU also recalibrates the eight-speed automatic transmission.

That all sounds good, except for gold being the new hallmark color.

Volvo promises to add lighter wheels that give on-lookers a view of the gold-painted Brembo brake calipers. A slotted design in the brake discs and the brake pads improve heat tolerance. But these new Polestar Engineered models are just the first step in Volvo one day finally rivalling brands such as BMW M and AMG, as full-fat Polestar models will likely hit even harder on the electrified sports auto drum. Seatbelt straps are gold, too, and the auto comes with Polestar emblems and black chrome exhaust pipes.

Volvo's T8 powertrain is comprised of a 2.0-liter turbocharged and supercharged engine, with an additional battery and electric motor mounted at the rear axle. Polestar Engineered models can be purchased through Volvo dealers or through the company's Care by Volvo subscription service.
