"The race ultimately was reduced down to who was more Trump, versus not, and I lost that race", Sanford acknowledged. Scalise has mostly recovered from his shooting wounds. The incident did result in censure from the South Carolina General Assembly, but Sanford did not resign over it.

A Sanford loss would be an abrupt end to a roller-coaster political career that included a resignation as South Carolina's governor following his admission of the affair.

It's a cautionary tale for Republicans in Congress as they try to win elections by showing loyalty to Trump supporters while also maintaining some independence as members of a co-equal branch of government.

"I'm happy about that", Hostin said as McCain rolled her eyes.

"Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA", the president tweeted.

Caleb Frostman, the Democrat running in Wisconsin State Senate District 1, claimed victory in Tuesday's special election and Frostman's campaign manager, Hannah Akbik, told CNN that Republican Andre Jacque conceded the race in a phone call with the Democrat. We saw the women's march. "It's really, really sad".

Rep. Jeff Duncan is seeking reelection for 3rd Congressional District of SC, a position he has held since he was elected in 2010.

He aligned himself with comments from retiring Tennessee Sen. Most recently, the establishment Gowdy sided against the president on "Spygate", saying the Federal Bureau of Investigation did nothing wrong despite reams of evidence to the contrary.

The race for second place is getting closer, with Warren at 25 percent and Templeton at 23 percent. As voters were heading to the polls Tuesday, the president took a shot at the incumbent congressman. Earlier this year at the party convention, journalist Leslie Cockburn won the nomination in Virginia's 5th Congressional District. Mark Sanford was defeated hours after President Trump endorsed Sanford's opponent, while Virginia chose Corey Stewart, a vocal proponent of keeping Confederate monuments, as the GOP Senate nominee. Stewart also received praise from Trump on Twitter Wednesday morning. Stewart, an actual Trump supporter, has the support of the president going into the general election against Sen. He will challenge Democratic Senator Tim Kaine.

Four decades in S.C. politics, 16 months in the governor's office and an endorsement from the president were not enough for Gov. Henry McMaster to avoid a runoff in the Republican governor's race primary. And while that likely didn't do much by itself, as it came just three hours before polls closed and after many had already voted, it's clear that the man who made it through "hiking the Appalachian Trail" couldn't survive taking on his party's president.

"It's not like people live in fear of the White House", offered Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., a veteran GOP strategist. Both are seeking re-election after having won in 2012 by just one percentage point.

I got a chance to speak to South Carolina's Political Director of Young Republicans, who told me, 18 to 40-year-olds really showed up to vote despite low turnout overall. In North Carolina, establishment-backed Rep. Robert Pittenger (R-NC) lost his primary to pro-Trump Dr. Mark Harris. McMaster was one of the few established Republicans in the state to back Trump in 2016, and became governor when Trump named Nikki Haley as United Nations ambassador.
