But Halep not only made it to the semifinals, she beat 2017 US Open champion Stephens 3-6 6-4 6-1 in the title match on Saturday (Sunday NZT) for her first Grand Slam trophy after three losses in major finals.

Others - including U.S. former tennis great Billie Jean King and ex-male professional James Blake - praised Nadal's victory, which was dominant despite an injury scare with hand cramp in the latter stages of the third set.

"Let me enjoy this title", Nadal said with a smile.

Rafael Nadal would love to surpass Roger Federer's men's record of 20 Grand Slam titles but says he is not "crazy" about catching his great rival. It added more voices by the time 2008 rolled around. The French Open statisticians are nicer than they should be, as all but one of Thiem's 19 errors in that stretch were unforced (officially, 12 were unforced and seven were forced).

- Nadal's uncle Miguel Angel Nadal was a former soccer player who represented Barcelona, RCD Mallorca and the Spain national team.

Not much more of a daunting task than doing so against Nadal at the French Open, where he is now 11-0 in finals and 86-2 overall. He was visited by the trainer that day, too, with Nadal saying it was to prevent sweat from traveling to his hand.

But Nadal held with some clever drop shots and after taking the second set it merely became a race against time to finish off Thiem before the rain arrived. Thiem withstood a barrage of break points to hold in a marathon sixth game, which he thought he had won at 40-30 when he left a wide ball, only for the umpire to overrule the line judge.

Thiem was considered the stiffest test for Nadal at the French Open and understandably so.

He saved three break points in his first service game, but a wayward backhand ensured Nadal took the fourth.

Nadal won the second set in 53 minutes. Maybe, just maybe, fans could get an entertaining French Open final-something that has been sorely lacking in this era of Nadal's absolute dominance. For Rafael Nadal, winning one eleven times is his reality.

But Thiem, unusually standing up to Nadal's first serve, forced two break points in the next game and converted the second with a flashing forehand into the right corner.

He had breezed through his opening four matches without dropping a set - extending his own personal best to 37 consecutive sets here - though falling short of Bjorn Borg's all-time record of 41 by losing the opener of his quarter-final against Diego Schwartzman.

Federer can regain top spot in the rankings by reaching the final in Stuttgart and, while congratulating Nadal on his astonishing achievement, the 36-year-old is aiming high on his start to the grass-court swing. Like previous year, Paris is tinged with red and yellow colors. And of course, with it being on clay, Nadal is an overwhelming favorite.

He also won Wimbledon for a second time in 2010 before claiming his first U.S. Open title, becoming the seventh man to win all four Grand Slams.
