Just days before the "Parts Unknown" host's death, fashion designer Kate Spade committed suicide in NY.

"If I find out that somebody in the person's life has committed suicide, that is a strong data point".

The suicide rate among young teen girls is now almost triple what it was in 2000.

The rate of suicide in the United States increased 28 percent from 1999 to 2016, according to a report last week from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Those without a known mental health condition suffered more from relationship problems and other life stressors such as criminal/legal matters, eviction/loss of home, and recent or impending crises".

Kansas ranked 19th overall in the number of suicides, but had the fifth highest rate of increase in suicides, following North Dakota, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Utah. While suicide rates in Tennessee went up only slightly in 2016 from 2015, the new figures are the highest recorded in Tennessee in more than 35 years of record-keeping.

Suicide rates are also rising worldwide, with some one million people dying annually from suicide. You can learn more about its services, including its guide on what to do if you see suicidal language on social media. "There was a 12 percent increase in suicide after Marilyn Monroe".

Negative life experiences can trigger suicidal thoughts such as death of a loved one, divorce/separation, a serious illness, a terminal illness, chronic physical pain, sexual, physical or verbal abuse, legal or financial problems, to name a few. Suicide attempts are even harder to count.

Mental illness, including depression and anxiety, is a major risk factor for suicide.

If you believe your loved one or friend is at risk of suicide, do not leave him or her alone. "Unless there's a note, it's hard to know" if some causes of death, like drug overdoses, are intentional or unintentional, she said. "If someone dies of cancer, we don't have to know what the person was wearing or what color their bedsheets were". She says such subtle symptoms as someone losing their temper more easily or whose sleep patterns and normal behavior have changed should prompt a caring conversation that might avert a potential tragedy.

"Twenty years ago, we wouldn't have even heard about any of these deaths until the 6 o'clock news", she says. You would think that we were in the midst of a suicide epidemic, an alarming prospect that was underscored by the deaths last week of both Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. Experts say that this can lead them to a profound sense of loneliness.
