Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will meet on September 15 for the rematch boxing fans have been waiting on for the past year, according to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya.

Promoter of Canelo Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya, was the first to announce things a while ago.

The pair's first bout last September ended in a controversial draw, with judge Adalaide Byrd's scorecard of 118-110 in favour of Alvarez widely ridiculed.

Golovkin and Alvarez were originally scheduled for a May 5 bout, but Alvarez had to pull out of the event following two positive tests for a banned substance.

De La Hoya told Rafael the fight was "100 percent over", but as that was happening, Golden Boy President Eric Gomez was putting together a "Hail Mary idea" to break the deadlock.

"Still working on it", Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler texted to ESPN 20 minutes after the deadline as he scrambled to see if Golovkin, who is in Moscow as a guest of one of his sponsors for the World Cup, was interested in the newest proposal.

On Tuesday, Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Alvarez, imposed 12 p.m. PT Wednesday deadline for Golovkin to accept an improved offer.

The Kazakh remains the unified WBC and WBA middleweight title holder.
