The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that one Australian had died while the British Foreign Office said a British woman had passed away.

The couple had reportedly left Australia to see the world months earlier, and had recently attended a wedding in Portugal.

Emergency workers found the phone still sitting on top of the wall.

The woman was identified as his partner, Louise Benson.

Another newspaper, the Jornal de Notícias, said fishermen had discovered a "horror scene" when they came across the bodies about 6.30am.

According to the Portuguese newspaper, Correio da Manhã, the couple died on Praia dos Pescadores (Fishermen's Beach).

A local naval official in the area says authorities believe the couple fell off the 90-foot wall while they were attempting to take a selfie.

"Will be greatly missed by all of us who love them."

The head of rescue services, Rui Pereira da Terra, believes the pair were on a wall overlooking a popular tourist beach when they lost their balance and fell.

Benson worked at a nonprofit that raises awareness about the destruction of wildlife in oceans, according to her Facebook.

The beach at Pescadores is surrounded by cliffs and a 30-metre high wall covered in shrubs.

"It seems that (the victims) might be getting a "selfie", when they let the phone fall, leaned over to grab it and fell", he was quoted as saying.

The Foreign Office said: "We are in touch with local authorities following the death of a British woman in Portugal and stand ready to provide support to her family".

The Australian Embassy in Lisbon has been notified of the deaths.

Ericeira, a fishing town favoured by surfers, is renowned for its seafood restaurants and nightlife.
