Woods's opulent US Open base has practical side

Tiger Woods confirmed to the media on Tuesday that he is indeed staying on his huge yacht during the US Open, one of golf's biggest competitions.

"Staying on a dinghy helps", he said, referring to his luxury yacht, Privacy, which is anchored nearby in the town of Sag Harbor.

On the 10-year anniversary since the last of his 14 major championship wins, Woods hoped the poa annua greens at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club would be the catalyst to finally have all aspects of his game clicking together. U.S. Junior Amateur champion Noah Goodwin missed his practice tee time on Monday after what is a 16-minute drive in normal traffic from his hotel took an hour and 40 minutes.

"I just had to hit a lot of putts, put in the legwork".

The US Open takes place at Shinnecock Hills this week in Long Island, New York, and gridlock traffic in the area has caused chaos on the roads heading to the course.

"I had no expectation of getting this far", he said.

"Hopefully this is one of those weeks where I put it all together and even it out and we'll see what happens".

"There's always something that isn't quite right and that's where we, as players, have to make adjustments".

But he could only muster a tie for 23rd as his putting was abysmal.

And although he has not yet won in his comeback this year, extending his drought since 2013, he has been competitive, including twice being in contention at back-to-back tournaments in Florida in March.

Woods put on his best ball-striking display of the season at the Memorial two weeks ago.

"What I did at Memorial, I just didn't feel comfortable over it", Woods said.

After Monday's practice round, congestion around Shinnecock Hills was so bad one prominent NY sports reporter described it as "biblical".

"I understand it because everyone wants to see a result on Sunday", Woods said. "I had just been given the OK to start walking again and to start moving around".

Woods said he'd worked hard on his stroke during his week off. And those greens were quick, and I just didn't feel comfortable and didn't hit many good putts. A lot of times you can hit great putts on poa, and it doesn't go in. I haven't really got a chance to walk about a little bit, but certainly will this week.

"I would like to get myself there a few more times. I didn't know if I was going to have them again".
