The 50-year-old addressed the media at their World Cup base in Krasnodar for the first time since being appointed Spain's new head coach, replacing Lopetegui after his sacking on Wednesday morning. You cannot do things this way.

"Madrid put its interests first, as did Lopetegui, and (Spanish federation president Luis) Rubiales was left in a very tough spot".

Former goalkeeper Lopetegui spent a season as coach of Real's B-team Castilla from 2008-09 before taking over as Spain Under-19 manager in 2010. "This is not the best solution but in life you can not escape your responsibilities", said Rubiales.

The national team is seeking to rebuild after a disappointing defense of the trophy in 2014, combining a new generation of players with the last of its world champions.

Rubiales had been riled by being told of Lopetegui's decision to take the Real job just five minutes before it was made public.

Rubiales continued; "I'm sure this will, in time, make us stronger".

By successfully blending talented youngsters and veterans from its golden generation, Lopetegui kept Spain unbeaten through 20 matches in charge, comfortably leading the team to the World Cup from a qualifying group that included Italy. One was to say no, one was to leave, the third was to be present, to take a step forward for the Spanish FA and Spanish football'.

"We can not alter two years of hard work in the coming days".

Of course, with Lopetegui joining Barcelona's El Clasico rivals, it's no wonder Xavi agrees with the decision to get rid of him ahead of the World Cup. According to The Guardian, he said: "I have spoken with the players and I can guarantee they will do everything, along with the new coach, to take the team as far as possible".

Former Spain defender Hierro's only previous senior coaching role was one season with Oviedo in the Spanish second division, although he was also assistant to Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid before that. We all know what this means.

Now it will proceed with a void at the top, with Lopetegui's replacement yet to be determined. "We have been compelled to make this decision".

"We're all hurt by this situation, I've told the players my reasons for doing it and they understand".

"They are fantastic players and with Julen they have been preparing this game for months".

He continued, saying that "while he was in the team, Julen has worked incredibly well", going on to describe the "situation that I have found" as being "very complex".
