New 595bhp Aston Martin Rapide AMR revealed

Aston Martin has taken the wraps off its Rapide AMR, revealing that it will build just 210 examples of the angriest version of the four-door model yet. Each vehicle will come with a numbered inspection plaque (just 210 will be built) and AMR-branded carbon-fibre sill plates.

"With enhanced performance, sharper dynamics and more powerful design language, Aston Martin has taken Rapide to new and exciting extremes". The result is a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4,4 seconds, which represents an improvement of half a second over the Rapide S. 21-inch wheels - standard or optionally forged - are the first ever fitted to an Aston Martin, the circular DRLs evoke the recent Zagato cars and the front grille is large than ever.

Visually, the vehicle looks largely identical to the concept from Geneva, with a detailed front grille and circular daytime running lights that are Zagato-inspired. This is also the first Rapide with carbon ceramic brakes - 400mm at the front with six-piston calipers and 360mm at the rear with four pistons each - and the first Aston Martin of any kind with 21 inch wheels, which necessitated special Michelin Super Sport tyres, developed specifically for this auto. The rear discs measure 360mm and have four-piston calipers. In addition the adaptive dampers from the Rapide S have been reworked for the AMR, including a 10mm ride height drop, with extensive development work done on the Nordschleife. A new front splitter, deeper side skirts, an aggressive rear diffuser and small lip spoiler - all made from carbon fibre - reduce lift. Both the Standard and Silhouette schemes are available with Mariana Blue, Scintilla Silver, Lightning Silver and Onyx Black exterior finishes. The Silhouette gets a full-length contrasting stripe in China Grey or Clubsport White instead.

At a company with a century-old racing heritage such as Aston Martin, the competition division assumes a greater importance in the scheme of things than it would at, say, Leyland Truck & Bus. They are split into Standard, Silhouette and Signature; the latter is what you see here, with Stirling Green paint, Lime accents and a Lime stripe for the look most similar to the Aston racers.

Inside the auto, the chosen exterior scheme is reflected on the inside with either AMR Lime or Galena Silver wearing and stitching. Each vehicle comes with a unique AMR inspection plaque, plenty of AMR branding and carbon sill plaques. Optionally available for the full race vehicle experience are carbon paddle shifters, a One-77 steering wheel and, er, an umbrella.

Aston Martin's local arm has confirmed the Rapide AMR will be priced from $459,950 plus on-road costs.

The Aston Martin Rapide AMR will be available worldwide (except Russian Federation and China) from the final quarter of 2018, with prices starting at £194 950 (R3.48 million) ex factory in the United Kingdom; expect to pay about R6 million landed in South Africa. It will be "available globally", though China and Russian Federation are set to miss out.
