Thomas finished 60 seconds ahead of nearest rival Adam Yates, victor of the final stage, with an overall time of 24 hours, 43 minutes and 12 seconds.

"It's incredible, it hasn't sunk in yet", Thomas said of the victory.

"Ive been feeling good all year", the Irishman said after the race.

"I was counting down the kilometres on the last climb and knew I had about 1'20" to lose to Adam Yates so, as each kilometre went by, I was more confident and happy. The guys rode really well for me.

Thomas also defended his overall race lead with a total time of 20:51:19.

He follows in the footsteps of compatriots Bradley Wiggins, who won the race twice, and three-time victor Chris Froome. "I'm more anxious about my form for the Tour de France".

"The Tour de France has been my goal since start of season, but the Volta a Catalunya set things back", Yates said about crashing out of the Catalonia tour in March. I get to ride the races I want and I am a leader in majority. "I look forward to the Tour now".

"It's been two back-to-back hard stages", he added. So today I made a decision to wait.

"Hopefully the authorities can just get their act together and have a decision, but I've got 100 per cent faith in him".

Baudet and Martin, third and fourth in the overall standings respectively, were unable to stay with Thomas, who broke clear of their small group 500 metres from the line. Geraint Thomas (GBR) Team Sky 24:43:12 2.

England's Adam Yates, who's twin Simon wore the pink jersey at the Giro d'Italia for 13 stages in May, was third on the day at 15 seconds.

The 32-year-old Thomas registered his first win at the Dauphine, probably the greatest success of his professional career, topping even his Paris-Nice victory in 2016.

Thomas is next due to race in the National Road Race championships in Northumberland where he is down to do the time trial (29 June) and the road race (1 July).
