Officials say a kayaker died in the area Saturday when a sinkhole opened up in the riverbed, creating a large whirlpool that overturned boats, the Washington Post reports. Wright's kayak capsized when he attempted to help a canoe that had also been caught in the whirlpool. The sinkhole is below the falls and near Dead Man's Curve.

At least one boater died Saturday after a sinkhole opened on the bed of Spring River in northern Arkansas, creating a whirlpool, according to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

"The river is still open, but the barricaded area should not be breached", AGFC officials said, according to Fox 25 Boston.

"We're not sure if it could happen again", said Keith Stephens, a spokesperson with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Video showed a flip-flop, a plastic water bottle and other debris swirling around it.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Fulton County, along with the game and fish commission, have installed buoys and roped off the area. "Our Regulatory Division will reach out to the county to provide information on the permitting requirements which may be needed in conjunction with any fix".
