Instead, Paul Hogan, the star of the Crocodile Dundee films of course, is to headline a different comedy entitled The Very Excellent Mr Dundee.

Hogan courted controversy earlier this year after a teased reboot of Crocodile Dundee, featuring United States comedian Danny McBride and Thor himself Chris Hemsworth, turned out to be an elaborate Super Bowl ad for Tourism Australia.

Hogan will play himself as his character is on the brink of receiving a Knighthood for services to comedy. "Don't do anything to mess this up", his manager tells him, according to the plot line. "However, despite all his best efforts, the next six weeks sees his name and reputation hilariously destroyed".

The film will be set in Los Angeles with shooting set to take place in Australia, Los Angeles, and Vancouver. The film marks yet another collaboration between Hogan and Aussie filmmaker Dean Murphy, director of "Charlie & Boots", "Strange Bedfellows" and "That's Not My Dog".

No further details about the film's writers or supporting cast have yet been released. However, 78-year-old Hogan has hinted that he will be calling on his celebrity pals to make cameos in the project.

Hogan recently thrilled and infuriated fans of the Crocodile Dundee film series in which he starred in the 1980s, by appearing in a short film that appeared to be a trailer for a new film in the franchise. A sleeper hit, it grossed $328 million at the worldwide box office and spawned two sequels, 1988's Crocodile Dundee II and 2001's Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles, neither of which met the expectations of the original.
