Kim, Trump arrive in Singapore for landmark summit

Kim was accompanied by North Korean Vice Chairman Kim Yong Chol, Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho and former Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong.

"Our whole relationship with North Korea and the Korean Peninsula is going to a very much different situation than it has in the past". Trump has said he hopes to make a legacy-defining deal for the North to give up its nuclear weapons, though he has recently sought to manage expectations, saying more than one meeting may be necessary.

When Business Insider asked Catherine Killough, a former official in the US State Department's Office of Korean Affairs and now a fellow at global security foundation Ploughshares Fund, what she sees as the biggest risk of a one-on-one meeting between Trump and Kim is, Killough focused on the lack of record.

Both men walked to Trump's bullet-proof limousine, nicknamed "The Beast", and looked in at the rear seat, with Trump apparently showing Kim something inside. News agency Associated Press cited a USA official saying that the two leaders will be accompanied by their translators during the one-on-one for about two hours.

"If I think it won't happen, I am not going to waste my time".

After briefly moving away from the media glare, Mr Kim and Mr Trump reappeared, walking together along a balcony and posing for pictures.

Kim, through a translator, told Trump that it "has not been easy to get here" and that "the old prejudices and practices worked as obstacles, but we have overcome them and we are here today".

Finally, the dessert options included dark chocolate tartlet ganache, vanilla Häagen-Dazs ice cream with cherry coulis, or Tropezienne, a cream-filled pastry. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Sung Kim, the U.S. ambassador to the Philippines who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, will hold a "working group" with a North Korean delegation.

As the cameras captured the moment, Trump quipped: "Very nice".

North Korea, however, has shown little appetite for surrendering nuclear weapons it considers vital to the survival of Kim's dynastic rule.

"The senior officials of the party and government sincerely wished Kim Jong Un good successes in the first summit meeting and talks between the DPRK and the United States and his safe return", the KCNA said.

Another possibility from the summit is a deal to end the Korean War, which North Korea has long demanded, presumably, in part, to get U.S. troops off the Korean Peninsula and, eventually, pave the way for a North Korean-led unified Korea.

Reacting to the news of the two leaders meeting, basketball star and unlikely North Korea envoy Dennis Rodman, who is also in Singapore, said holding the summit was the right thing to do.

Kim was due to leave on Tuesday afternoon, a source involved in the planning of his visit has said.

Trump spoke to Moon and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, both key allies of Washington in the region, to discuss developments ahead of the summit.
