Fortnite is joining the world of esports, with Epic Games announcing prize pools of $100,000,000 for competitions over the coming season. The Fortnite Week 4 Challenges go live at roughly 11:00 May 22 BST so you will have to wait until then to actually start grinding through these challenges.

It also appears that the organization is even prepared to deploy some of its current players of other esports to also participate in competitive Fortnite until a dedicated team is assembled.

The first five duos have been announced for the Fortnite Celebrity Pro-Am event that will be taking place at E3 2018. It's everywhere, and that's due in large part to its presence on broadcasting sites like Twitch where it is the most viewed game.

Whether the young title can continue to draw attention and crowds in the face of fresher talent moving forward will depend heavily on streamers and eSports leagues continuing to show interest, but $100 million in investment in prize pools will nearly certainly prove to be quite helpful. "Fortnite with the biggest [hold my beer] in esports history".

The studio has confirmed that this influx of cash is all for the first season, so that means you can expect some massive prize pools for Fortnite esports events over the next 12 months.

Esports has traditionally attracted a young, male demographic that is obsessed with Dota 2, League of Legends, or something else along those lines.

Bearing everything in mind, it's likely that Epic Games will be bringing jetpacks into the fold by way of a Limited Time Mode, especially since they are scheduled to arrive at the typical weekly update when previous LTMs are cycled out of rotation. "We plan to be more inclusive and focused on the joy of playing and watching the game".

That money could bring in a big new audience of viewers as well. Epic went on to say that details about the nature of the competitions and the eligible platforms are still to come, but this is the first major announcement about Fortnite entering the competitive play scene since its launch previous year.
