Ohio State just made life more hard if it wants to finish its season with a run in the Big Ten Baseball Tournament by dropping its first game against No. 2 seed Purdue 8-2. Purdue tied it at 2-all two innings later and put up five runs in the sixth - a spurt keyed by Shipley's double into the right field gap - to break things open.

The Hawkeyes' only hit off of a collection of four Wolverines pitchers came when Lorenzo Elion singled in the second inning.

Iowa (33-19) did not have a baserunner after Robert Neustrom walked and was caught stealing the fourth inning.

Iowa head coach Rick Heller. We had 10 wins against top 50 teams. It's one frame of mind right now. Franklin then booted a ground ball off the bat of sophomore Ben Norman, allowing Hoeg to score to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Franklin muscled a ball out to right-center for a solo home run, which is quite a feat under any circumstance at cavernous TD Ameritrade Park, but in particular on a day when the wind is blowing in.

The Hawkeyes had base runners in the first five innings, but Iowa's best scoring opportunity came in the seventh. "Had a couple chances in the first three innings to execute, get a bunt down, and stuff like that, and we didn't do it. Couple guys chased out of the zone when we needed a walk after they were 1-0". "To say we have to win it (to get in), no, but I think, if we win some games, we're still in good shape". Jeff Criswell and William Tribucher threw the final three innings without allowing a base runner.

Connor Curlis (7-4) took the loss for Ohio State.

Ohio State was hoping to get off to a good start in Omaha, but instead dropped the first game in the Big Ten Baseball Tournament.

Iowa finished with 12 strikeouts in the game, its 26th game with 10 or more strikeouts.

Iowa returns to action Thursday, playing an elimination game against Ohio State at 9 a.m. (CT).
