The 29-year-old, reportedly, visited an orthopaedic surgeon at the Khar Hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday and the doctor advised him against playing in the County Championship. He also played 9 out of India's 18 T20 Internationals. Such was Kohli's struggle against the swinging ball, that he fell to England's pace spearhead James Anderson four times in that series.

Virat Kohli's much-anticipated county stint has been cancelled with a neck injury suffered during his penultimate IPL on May 17.

"Kohli, who was scheduled to play for Surrey in the month of June, has been ruled out from participating", the Board of Control for Cricket in India said in a statement.

"The Team India captain will now undergo a period of rehabilitation under the supervision of the BCCI medical team". "The BCCI Medical Team is confident that Kohli will regain full fitness ahead of India's upcoming tours to Ireland and England", the release further stated.

India's limited-overs series against England starts on July 3 with the first T20 global at Old Trafford. They then take on the hosts in a five-test series starting in August.

Kohli made a decision to miss the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Bengaluru to play for Surrey in June and prepare for the England tour. However, now with this recent development, he will have to miss both, the Test match and his debut county appearance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday accepted Indian skipper Virat Kohli's fitness challenge and said he will soon be sharing his own video.

"Kohli was not to feature in the historic maiden Test match against Afghanistan next month, and now with this injury, his county stint will not take off either", informed a BCCI official who knew about the development.

Kohli has played all the nine Tests that India featured since June 2017. Kohli is one of the players whose workload is of concern for the BCCI and Team India Head Coach Ravi Shastri (the others being pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya). He also took part in 29 of the 32 One-Day Internationals and nine of the 18 T20Is played in the last 12 months, overall featuring in 47 of the 59 worldwide games that India partook in. "Yes, Virat has had fatigue issues and this is a case of workload management rather than injury management".

The franchise physios and trainers are supposed to give weekly updates to the national team trainers and the ones present at the NCA.
