Emery addressed the media for the first time since his appointment as Arsenal head coach on Wednesday and suggested Ozil can expect to be central to his plans.

A 46-year-old Unai Emery left French PSG at the end of the 2017-18 season and signed a deal with Arsenal.

"I am thrilled to be joining one of the great clubs in the game". "Arsenal is known and loved throughout the world for its style of play, its commitment to young players, the fantastic stadium, the way the club is run". "His hard-working and passionate approach and his sense of values on and off the pitch make him the ideal person to take us forward".

Emery, however, will not have the financial resources he enjoyed at PSG who past year shattered the world transfer record to sign Neymar from Barcelona for 222 million euros (195 million pounds).

Arsenal backed off from a gamble on former player Mikel Arteta, who is part of Pep Guardiola's coaching staff at Premier League champion Manchester City.

Emery impressed Arsenal's selection panel of chief executive Ivan Gazidis, head of recruitment Sven Mislintat and head of football relations Raul Sanllehi to win their unanimous approval out of an eight-man field. The Gunners have already been linked with Borussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos, while inconsistent Arsenal full-backs Hector Bellerin, Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac could also do with a few of Emery's rigorous defensive tutorials. We had a meeting on Monday.

Instead the role has gone to Emery, who won three successive Europa League titles with Sevilla before moving to PSG in 2016. Arsenal have been looking for a new coach for the first time in over two decades since Wenger announced last month he was stepping down at the end of the season. He has also had spells in Spain with Valencia and Almeria after beginning his coaching career with Lorca Deportiva.

Arsenal did follow the video with a picture of Emery and Wenger together when Arsenal faced PSG in the Champions League in 2016, but the absence of Arsenal's most successful manager from the video seemed odd.

His last three victories in the latter competition-in 2014, 2015 and 2017-helped enhance his longevity in the job, but few Arsenal fans would agree with Wenger's assessment after a decade or more of visible decline for their side.

What's more, their only points away from home in 2018 came on the final day of the season at Huddersfield Town.
