"Derby County can confirm that Gary Rowett has asked for permission to speak with Stoke City regarding the vacant manager's position at the bet365 Stadium", read a Derby statement.

The Potters have moved swiftly to recruit a new leader after sacking Paul Lambert following the club's relegation from the Premier League.

"It was never in my mind to leave".

It will still be a big call for Rowett, who has served the Rams as a player, coach and manager and still lives in the area.

"Thankfully, I can get on with doing that now".

Rowett led Derby to the Championship play-offs in his first full season in charge at Pride Park, but saw his side's promotion hopes ended by Fulham last week.

Relegated Stoke have returned for Rowett, their No 1 target in January after the dismissal of Mark Hughes, and are hoping to agree a deal in the next 48 hours as they prepare for the Championship.

Stoke City will announce the appointment of Gary Rowett as their new manager on Tuesday morning, according to Sky Sports News HQ.

Stoke would have to pay sizeable compensation for Rowett, who started his managerial career with Burton Albion, and it remains to be seen how hard Derby would try to keep him.
