Houston police chief says he's 'hit rock bottom' after school shooting

The teenager, identified by law enforcement as Dimitrios Pagourtzis, has been charged with capital murder and is being held without bail in Santa Fe, Texas, where authorities said he went on a shooting spree shortly before 8 a.m. CDT on Friday.

Ten people were also injured in the attack, said Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

But Lauren Severin, a 17-year-old junior wearing a cross around her neck, told Burnett that her impression of the suspect was very different after having a couple classes with him.

Leia Olinde says authorities confirmed to her family that her aunt, Cynthia Tisdale, was killed in Friday morning's shooting at Santa Fe High School.

The Texans said in a statement they were "saddened by the tragic events at Santa Fe High School" and extended "heartfelt condolences to the victims, their families and all those affected".

Santa Fe High School is still "an active crime scene".

Authorities have not disclosed how many explosive devices were found or if any of the deceased were killed or hurt by explosions.

"I think every parent instinctively knows they don't know everything about their kids, but when you find out something like this today, it's extremely hard", Poehl told Houston TV station KTRK. He made his initial court appearance Friday evening by video link from the Galveston County Jail.

Survivors of the school shooting in Parkland expressed their support of the students at Santa Fe High School.

Abbott said Friday afternoon that police were investigating two residences near the school and had found explosive devices, including a Molotov cocktail, at a home and in a vehicle.

Mr Poehl, the suspect's lawyer, said he expected a second hearing soon and would likely have more information about that on Monday.

Earlier Friday, school district officials confirmed on their Facebook page that the school was on lockdown, following reports of an "active shooter". Officials at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms announced shortly thereafter they were also responding to the situation.

Authorities said the incident happened as people headed to their cars Friday night following a ceremony for graduates of the Perry Learning Center, which prepares students for careers as an alternative to traditional high schools.

Students and faculty, bussed on to campus in small groups, were allowed to enter the high school on Saturday to retrieve belongings, though investigators closed off part of the grounds.

Angelique Ramirez was a student at Santa Fe High School.

Three patients with gunshot wounds are at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, hospital spokesman Raul Reyes said at a news conference. The other woman was shot in the leg. This is the 22nd USA school shooting so far this year, and the third instance in eight days in which a gunman was on a school campus.

The shooting was the deadliest school attack since 17 were killed in February at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The governor says the suspect, identified by a law enforcement official to be 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, said he originally meant to commit suicide but gave himself up and told authorities that he didn't have the courage to take his own life.

"It's been happening everywhere", she said.

Abbott pledged to work with state legislators to look into solutions to gun violence. The NFL star, who tweeted "Absolutely horrific" in response to the shooting, has taken on philanthropic causes in the past, raising over $37 million for relief following Hurricane Harvey a year ago. "This has been going on too long in our country".
