Tax dollars should not be going to Planned Parenthood

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller (D) has disqualified himself from defending the state against inevitable legal challenges to the state's recently passed law banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, The Hill reported. Litigation could take years.

Although federal law already forbids the use of federal funding for abortions in most cases, Republicans have long insisted that money going to Planned Parenthood indirectly supports the procedure. The firm had no immediate comment.

However, since the case of abortionist and convicted murderer Kermit Gosnell, whose "house of horrors" drew attention to the potential for a lack of safety and sanitary conditions in many abortion clinics, pro-abortion groups' defense of a woman's right to "safe and legal abortion" has received considerable scrutiny.

The lawsuit's claims are focused on the Iowa Constitution.

Earlier this month, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed into law a measure that would outlaw abortions after detection of a fetal heartbeat, which is typically possible around six weeks into pregnancy.

"Since the Thomas More Society's mission is to protect women and children from the devastating consequences of abortion, when there is a choice between life and death, the Thomas More Society is honored to be called upon to defend life", Cannon said in the statement.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America executive vice president Dawn Laguens told CNN: "Our bodies are our own and shouldn't be at the mercy of the Trump-Pence administration". "In the 45 years since (Roe v. Wade), no federal or state court has upheld such a risky law".

The Louisiana bill is similar to a 15-week abortion ban that was passed in MS in March.

Rita Bettis, ACLU of Iowa legal director referred to the law as "dangerous".

The law is evidence of the state's conservative shift after the 2016 election, when Republicans gained control of the Legislature and the governor's office for the first time in almost 20 years.

"It's a way to wiggle away at Planned Parenthood federal funding, and a way to reinforce the idea that abortion is not family planning", Marcum told The Hill.

Planned Parenthood has also announced it will hold in July its largest volunteer training event ever, bringing together 3,000 activists and leaders in Detroit to provide them various resources for going back into their communities to then build upon the organization's network, according to CNN.
