The American Medical Association, National Association of School Psychologists, American Psychoanalytic Association, American Academy of Pediatrics and American Counseling Association also all discredit the practice, NBC News reported.

"No child should ever be subjected to the abusive practice of so-called 'conversion therapy, '" said HRC President Chad Griffin. Conversion therapy is now defined as "unprofessional conduct" and health care practitioners could be subjected to disciplinary action.

"The potential risks of reparative therapy are great, including depression, anxiety and self-destructive behavior, since therapist alignment with societal prejudices against homosexuality may reinforce self-hatred already experienced by the patient", according to the association, which says conversion therapy programs tell participants that "homosexuals are lonely, unhappy individuals who never achieve acceptance or satisfaction". Meagan Simonaire (R-Anne Arundel Co.), in an emotional speech on the House floor, revealed that her parents had considered seeking out conversion therapy for her after she came out to them as bisexual.

"In signing this legislation, Governor Hogan joined the General Assembly in choosing to not only protect LGBTQ youth from harm, but to send an affirmation to children across Maryland who may be struggling with their sexual orientation or gender identity", added FreeState Justice Executive Director Mark Procopio in a press release. Their respective governors are expected to sign the bills into law. "They are flawless as they are".

California banned gay conversion therapy in 2012, and 10 other states have followed suit. Richard Madaleno, who sponsored the bill, reports CBS.

There is still much work to do when it comes to combating "conversion therapy" - numerous new laws banning it only apply to youth, and the majority of states operate without any limits on the practice. In February 2016, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced regulations restricting the practice, but conversion therapy is not fully banned in the state.

"I think it's fantastic, because it will save the lives of young people in our state", said Sen.
