Instagram now appears to be taking a page from Google's stylebook as the Facebook-owned photo- and video-sharing app is working on a new feature called "Usage Insights" which will allow users to know more about the time they spend on Instagram.

Following its leak, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom confirmed the Usage Insights feature in a tweet, saying it will help users "know more about the time they spend on Instagram". He said that any time that users spend on Instagram should be "positive and intentional".

He said: "Understanding how time online impacts people is important, and it's the responsibility of". We want to be part of the solution. "I take that responsibility seriously".

Systrom confirmed the feature after a developer named Jane Manchun Wong dug into the computer code of Instagram's mobile app and noticed an upcoming "Usage Insights" section under testing. "It's not exactly clear whether that will be your total time spent in Instagram ever, which could be a pretty scary number to some users, or within some shorter time frame like a day, week, or month".

But phone addiction is becoming an increasingly troubling phenomenon. Studies show those who depend on their smartphones have worse anxiety, increased stress, and a higher risk of depression.
