Sky and HBO will be making a new documentary series that focuses on Adnan Syed.

As reported by the Baltimore Sun, the office of Attorney General Brian Frosh asked the Maryland Court of Appeals on Monday to overturn the lower-court ruling for the retrial.

Serial followed the ins and outs of Lee's murder (The Nisha Call!) and Syed's subsequent trial (Christina Gutierrez!).

The series promises "new discoveries, as well as groundbreaking revelations that challenge the state's case" in Syed's trial. The cable giants have now announced "The Case Against Adnan Syed", a four-hour documentary series directed by Academy Award nominee Amy Berg (best known for her other crime documentaries "Deliver Us from Evil" and "West of Memphis").

Syed was convicted of murdering his high school girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999; the podcast examined evidence and, as its executive producer Julie Snyder told NPR, showed that "the story that the state presented at trial could not have happened".

Amy Berg - the filmmaker in charge of the series - was granted access to law enforcement officials, Adnan Syed's defence team, Syed's family, and Syed himself.

As fans of the incredible podcast Serial will know, following the 1999 disappearance and murder of an 18-year-old Baltimore County high school student named Hae Min Lee, her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was convinced of the crime.

It's also been revealed that Nick Cave will provide original music for the upcoming project.

Director of Programming, Sky Entertainment UK & Ireland, Zai Bennett said, "We're excited to partner with our friends at HBO to bring this fascinating and gripping case to television screens worldwide".

The documentary, which has reportedly been in production since 2015, doesn't have a premiere date yet.
