In fact, Al-Zahar seemed somewhat miffed that his interviewer suggested that the Gaza protests were "peaceful".

The leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip told Al Jazeera that the terror group has made a humanitarian deal with Egypt and is not interested in having the current situation escalate into a war with Israel.

"This is not peaceful resistance", he admitted.

"When you have weapons that are being wielded by men who were able to prevent the strongest army in the region from entering the Gaza strip for 51 days, and were able to capture or kill soldiers of that army - is this really 'peaceful resistance?" asked al-Zahhar, whose remarks were translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

"So when we talk about 'peaceful resistance, ' we are deceiving the public", al-Zahhar said.

Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since 2007, has actively encouraged Palestinians to participate in the series of border riots dubbed as the "Great March of Return". The clashes between the Palestinian rioters and the Israeli forces in Gaza intensified on Monday as the United States opened its new embassy in Jerusalem. We must remember that recent events are a direct continuation of the wave of violence organised by Hamas, a murderous terror organisation whose stated aim is the destruction of the State of Israel.

Only later, after the condemnations had been issued by leaders and governments around the world, did Islamic Jihad and Hamas, two prominent terror groups based in Gaza, admit that at least 13 of those killed were members of their organizations.

The head of the defense Ministry said during a visit to IDF positions near the border with Gaza on Wednesday, may 16.

He accused Hamas of war crimes, claiming the movement used a mob of rioters to enter Israel for the goal of conducting attacks and kidnapping Israeli citizens.
