Volvo "Will No Longer Develop a New Generation of Diesel Engines"

He did admit that a major advantage of diesel was long-range driving and low fuel consumption, but countered that the same benefits could now be achieved by the new generation of 48-volt mild-hybrids, which use electric starter-generator motors to help power the car's engine for short bursts, but come without the weight and complication of more conventional hybrids.

Nothing was mentioned about Volvo's plans with regard to the medium form of electrification - hybrid powertrains (HEVs) with a high-voltage battery that can not be charged externally, like Toyota's and Lexus' Hybrid Synergy Drive.

Volvo has confirmed that the next generation of the S60 premium saloon won't be fitted with a diesel engine of any kind. It was the first traditional vehicle maker to commit to all-out electrification in July 2017.

That said, even petrol engines will eventually be phased out, with Volvo referring to the hybrid models as a "transitional" stepping stone on the road to full electrification. The announcement was made at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show, the world's leading market for electrified cars. The S60's estate version, the V60, was launched earlier this year in Stockholm.

It will initially be available with a range of four-cylinder Drive-E petrol engines as well as with two petrol plug-in hybrid versions.

Meanwhile, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV will cease to offer diesel versions for its Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Jeep and Maserati brands by 2022, as Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne sees hybrid vehicles as the way to meet goals on Carbon dioxide reduction - with diesel sales unlikely to recover.

Production of the new S60 will start this fall at Volvo Cars' brand new manufacturing facility outside Charleston, South Carolina. Interestingly, the plant will be the sole hub for the S60, meaning USA -built S60s will be sold worldwide.

The decision to make a diesel-free S60 doesn't affect Americans.
