(Jim Renacci won his primary for Ohio Senate, but failed to crack 50% against relatively weak competition.) Rep. Raul Labrador is the next Republican congressman up for a promotion, and he is in a tough race against Lt. Gov. Brad Little and businessman Tommy Alquist. There, they are hoping to pick up a chunk of the 23 seats they need to win the House majority.

But before party leaders can focus on general election campaigns, voters must settle some divisive and crowded primaries.

Because no Democrats are running for Nebraska state treasurer, the victor of Tuesday's Republican primary is all but certain to get the job.

While Carpenter has embraced Trump's rhetoric and policies, State Rep. Knute Buehler, widely figured to be the leading Republican candidate, has repeatedly distanced himself from the president. Further down the ballot were races for lieutenant governor, U.S. House and state Legislature.

It is Primary Day in Pennsylvania, the first election day since the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court ordered changes to the state legislative map. In addition to Pennsylvania, there were nominating contests in Nebraska, Idaho and Oregon.

Democrats' quest to take control of the U.S. House of Representatives and stymie President Donald Trump's agenda began in earnest on Tuesday after voters in Pennsylvania chose a slate of nominees to compete in a pivotal battleground state.

U.S. Reps. Pat Meehan, Ryan Costello and Bob Brady are not seeking re-election, which prompted a plethora of candidates - particularly in the 5th Congressional District. The 15th District will also likely be close: After losing to a Republican in 2010, Democratic Sen. And on the left is pastor Greg Edwards (who's supported by Bernie Sanders). After redistricting, this district shifted from territory that President Trump narrowly carried to an area that Clinton won by 2 points, giving Democrats a prime pickup opportunity.

Elsewhere, Democrats are trying to unseat Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, who is running for re-election in a swing district. Wallace held off Rachel Reddick, an EMILY's List-endorsed 33-year-old former Navy prosecutor, to win the primary. Guy Reschenthaler defeated state Rep. Rick Saccone in a seat that had been redrawn to favor Republicans, The Post-Gazette reported.

Leib, of Center City, ran unopposed in the GOP primary.

The new Second Congressional District encompasses Northeast Philadelphia, the river wards and parts of North Philadelphia that lie east of Broad Street. The new maps are generally more favorable to Democrats than Republicans, but Tuesday's election results will make that even more clear.

In Oregon, the race to observe would be the GOP gubernatorial main to tackle incumbent Democratic Governor Kate Brown. Trump asked Barletta to run for Senate and is expected to campaign for him. "He was with me early on, before everyone else started jumping on board".

Two prospective challengers for unopposed incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Bob Casey and Gov. Tom Wolf will face off in Republican primaries for those nominations. Scott Wagner will run against Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf after winning the GOP primary, CBS Philadelphia reports. Voters also decided the outcomes in contested primaries for lieutenant governor in both parties.

Democrats got a large part of their answer in the candidacy of Braddock, Pa. Mayor John Fetterman, who was declared the victor in an unusual primary for lieutenant governor, ousted incumbent Lt. Gov. Mike Stack, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

Casey, the son of a late former governor, has strong name recognition and has won five statewide elections, including two as auditor general and one as state treasurer.

Eastman says she would bring a fresh perspective to the office and argues her views better reflect those of Omaha-area residents. "I'm not about the party; I'm not about the system". It also said Barletta backed Republican efforts to slash taxes for corporations and the wealthy and attack Medicare and Social Security, and that he would put Trump's interests ahead of the people of Pennsylvania. Fischer is favored to hold her seat in November. They will find out who their Democratic opponents will be after Tuesday's primary.

To the west, Democrats are headed toward a photo finish in Nebraska, where former Rep. Brad Ashford - a conservative "Blue Dog" who lost to Republican Rep. Don Bacon in 2016 - is locked in a razor-tight race against progressive Kara Eastman. The victor faces Republican Dan David in the fall.

Ricketts easily fended off medical marijuana activist Krystal Gabel in the Republican race.
