Attackers also targeted head coach Jorge Jesus and stabbed one of Sporting's physiotherapists, according to TVI24.

Bas Dost sustained a nasty looking head injury after fans attacked Sporting Lisbon players at their training complex.

Public television RTP reported that around 50 intruders, who had covered their faces to not be identified, interrupted practice and assaulted a number players and staff.

"Sporting is not this, Sporting cannot be this", the club said in a statement.

"Sporting Club of Portugal vehemently repudiate the incidents registered today at the Sporting academy", said the club in a statement.

Correio de Manha are carrying images of masked men invading the club's facilities, and say that not only were players and staff "beaten", but facilities were also damaged.

"We will take every measure we can to find those responsible for what happened and we will not shy away from demanding punishments for those who acted in this absolutely lamentable manner".

Portuguese club Sporting condemned "acts of vandalism and aggression" on Tuesday after forward Bas Dost was injured when a group of hooded supporters, armed with sticks and belts, attacked players and staff at the club's training complex.

The incident occurred just days after goalkeeper Patricio's late mistake caused Sporting to lose 2-1 at Maritimo, an error that ultimately caused the club to miss out on qualifying for next season's Champions League. Tuesday's events were hardly ideal preparation for their upcoming Portuguese Cup final against Aves on Sunday evening.

In April, De Carvalho claimed he was suspending 19 of the first-team players after Sporting's UEFA Europa League exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid, although he later appeared to back down.
