Three militants were killed and one injured when eight terrorists attacked a police headquarters in Indonesia's Riau province on Wednesday, police said.

While the police managed to shoot four of the attackers, the remaining five escaped, said the police chief of Riau.

Three of the men were shot and killed by police.

According to reports from journalists at the scene, who were covering another story right before the attack, a white Toyota Avanza smashed into the outer fence of the police headquarters.

A van carrying four men drove up to the front gate of the outpost of the city of Riau, and one of the men jumped out of the vehicle and began attacking police with a samurai sword. Wasisto did not comment on this.

A footage showed that a man lying on the ground with a sword next to his body.

The police shot two of them, Doddy said. "One of them is being checked by a bomb squad", he was quoted by Kompas TV as saying, referring to a suspected bomb strapped to the militant's body.

The string of attacks comes as Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, welcomes the first day of Ramadan.

Police suspect they were carried out by a cell of the Islamic State-inspired group Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an umbrella organisation on a U.S. State Department terrorist list that is reckoned to have drawn hundreds of Indonesian sympathisers of Islamic State.
