Last week, ABC announced a number of TV cancellations, including the Kiefer Sutherland-headlined political conspiracy drama Designated Survivor.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news and while a deal is still far from completion - the series is an expensive one to make and the streaming rights now belong to Hulu in the United States - it's a very intriguing prospect.

Does the line of succession for Designated Survivor lead to Netflix?

"[The show] did well in delayed viewing but its Live+Same Day delivery in the 10 PM hour had become challenging", he added.

In fact, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey stated that the high turnover of showrunners was one of the main reasons for its cancellation. "We were less confident with the creative path forward than the other shows we brought back".

Ratings-wise, the show did fairly well early on, averaging nearly six million viewers, but more recently it had only been averaging around four million viewers, which placed it near the bottom of ABC's top drama series.

Designated Survivor went through four showrunners for its two seasons on the air, and had a deal a place with a fifth to run the show in Season 3. Also featuring in the cast are Natasha McElhone, Adan Canto, Italia Ricci, LaMonica Garrett, Tanner Buchanan, Kal Penn, Maggie Q and Paulo Costanzo.
