"The message in the move of the embassy and in the horrendous figures of unarmed people being shot is the same: Israeli lives matter, Palestinian lives don't", he said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freehand has urged cooler heads to calm the conflict in Gaza as violence has increased to its deadliest in years. It seized control of Gaza in 2007 from the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas.

Rupert Colville, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, decried Israel's actions. At the same time, the opening of the embassy, condemned by Palestinians as blatantly pro-Israel, further dimmed prospects of what President Donald Trump had once touted as plans to negotiate the Mideast "deal of the century".

The move of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv has incensed Palestinians, who claim eastern Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.

Commentators drew attention to the stark contrast between the images from Jerusalem - of a high-level United States delegation, alongside Mr Netanyahu and his wife, celebrating the new U.S. embassy opening - and the violent images emerging from Gaza.

For Israel's largest circulation newspaper, the pro-Netanyahu Yisrael Hayom, the Gazan deaths were the least important thing that happened along the border.

Ramadan's date is dictated by the lunar calendar and was initially scheduled to begin Tuesday evening, meaning it would coincide with the annual remembrance of the Nakba, the Arabic-language term for "catastrophe" that refers to the mass displacement of Palestinians in the wake of the 1948 founding of Israel and the war with its neighboring Arab states that immediately ensued.

The US government has also placed the blame for the bloodshed with Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip and does not recognize Israel's right to exist.

"There is far too little discussion in the Security Council on Iran's destabilizing presence in Syria, its promotion of violence in Yemen, its support for terrorism in Gaza and its risky and illegal weapons buildup in Lebanon", Haley said. He defended his country's use of force, saying: "Every country has the obligation to defend its borders".

"Hamas is a terrorist organization that states its intention to destroy Israel and it sends thousands of people to breach the border fence to realize this goal. We will continue to act with determination to protect our sovereignty and our citizens".

Tens of people attended the funeral of Laila al-Ghandour, who died of tear gas inhalation late on Monday.

What has the worldwide reaction been?

White House spokesman Raj Shah said: "The responsibility for these tragic deaths rests squarely with Hamas".

Was the violence linked to the opening of the embassy? I was pleading with him to say please is there nothing we can do to stall this. It is a settlement, not an embassy. "A USA settlement in East Jerusalem".

The atmosphere at the dedication ceremony was certainly in stark contrast to that at the Gaza border.

But MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell complained Tuesday that Trump's decision to relocate the U.S. Embassy was "appalling" because Israel made no concessions.

In a December 23 vote at the U.N. General Assembly, Canada was one of 35 countries that abstained from declaring U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital to be null and void. History will not forgive you.

Commenting in the Israeli daily Yedioth Aharonoth, however, journalist Ben-Dror Yemini said the situation was "self-inflicted" and called on Palestinians to get over the events of 70 years ago.

People held signs that said, "Apartheid was defeated here, it can be defeated in Israel and in the Palestinian territories".
