Batman Prequel About Alfred the Butler Gets Series Order at Epix

What do you guys think of Alfred getting his own TV series? Called Pennyworth, the drama (from Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller) will follow the trials and tribulations of Batman's beloved butler, Alfred Pennyworth, and has been given a 10-episode, straight-to-series order.

Said Michael Wright, President, Epix, "As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn't be more excited to make Epix the home of this series". It's exciting that Cannon and Heller are diving back into Batman for their next project, as their work on Gotham shows that they're very unafraid to take a "put my thang down, flip it, and reverse it" attitude towards the Batman mythos.

Casting is yet to begin, though we understand Sean Pertwee, who plays Alfred Pennyworth on Fox's flagship Gotham series, won't be involved, which presumably leaves the door open to cast a new and younger (?) incarnation of Batman's loyal ally and friend.

Heller and Cannon added: "Michael and his colleagues have created the ideal venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on "Pennyworth" are thrilled to be on the Epix slate". Epix is targeting a 2019 premiere date. The network's dark comedy Get Shorty is set to kick off its second season this summer starring Ray Romano and Chris O'Dowd.

Gotham, while not a ratings breakout, has been a respectable performer for Fox and earned an abbreviated 13-episode renewal for a fifth and final season. Television Group, Warner Horizon Scripted Television was founded in 2006 and is one of the entertainment industry's leading producers of dramatic and comedic programming for the cable and subscription/on-demand marketplace.
