23 missing as boat capsizes in Godavari river

Around 17 people have been rescued while 23 people are still missing.

"Anguished by the capsizing of a boat in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district".

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N China Rajappa spoke to East Godavari district officials over phone and enquired about the incident.

"This evening, a boat ferrying people capsized in Godavari River near Devipatnam here".

Today's incident is the second boat accident on the river within a week.

"We are not sure what caused the boat to capsize", Additional Superintendent of Police Ajitha Vejendla told The Indian Express. We are interviewing those who swam ashore to ascertain what happened. Driver Khaza Mohiddeen was trying to reach banks at Vadapalli to deport two passengers.

The private launch (boat) belonging to Lakshmi Narasimha Travels was not part of the tourist boats taking tourists to Papi Hills.

The boat was reportedly blown over by heavy gales at around 5pm local time (12.30pm BST). However, the driver of the boat managed to steer the boat ashore and and the mishap was averted.
