Under construction flyover collapses in Varanasi, 12 feared dead

"I can not state the cause of the incident till an investigation is conducted", Project Manager KR Sudan told ANI.

Modi said the Uttar Pradesh government was monitoring the situation.

The Indian Army was called in at the collapse site. Rescue operations are underway and the police is regulating traffic. The total length of the bridge is 2261 metres and total cost Rs 129 crores, Mr. Kumar said.

The disaster took place during rush hour traffic.

According to CNN News18, a girder of the flyover collapsed, trapping around 50 people, mostly labourers. Many among those trapped included labours and passersby. "The @NDRFHQ teams have been rushed to the spot for rescue operations", the home minister's office tweeted. The Prime Minister started his speech at the BJP headquarters by expressing his condolence to the deceased families and then expressed his joy of getting huge mandate in Karnataka elections.

At least 18 people were killed and three were rescued after a portion of an under-construction flyover collapsed in Varanasi's cantonment area on Tuesday. "I pray that the injured recover soon", Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, posted on Twitter. He further added, "I spoke to UP CM Yogi Adityanath regarding the situation due to the collapse of an under-construction flyover in Varanasi". Senior police and administration officers also reached the site of the incident.

The team had been asked to immediately leave for Varanasi and hold investigations. Meanwhile, hectic work is going on to cut the fallen girder with the help of cutters to bring out trapped persons. He, however, refused to give details of those died in the incident.

Officials said the toll is expected to rise.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM and PWD Minister Keshav Maurya, who was directed by Mr. Adityanath to rush to Varanasi, said, "whoever is guilty will not be spared".
