Michigan Basketball To Play At Villanova Next Season In Title Game Rematch

If this does end up being the case, that rematch in the 2018 Gavitt Games will be exciting for Villanova and MI since both teams will be looking to make early statements about being serious contenders. The contest in Chicago will be the Nittany Lions' first at DePaul since January 2, 1982, and the first in the Blue Demons' Wintrust Arena.

On Tuesday, it was announced that the Hoosiers will play Marquette in the 2018 Gavitt Games.

The Gavitt Games is an eight-game series between teams from the Big East conference and the Big Ten conference that started during the 2015 season.

This will be the second time in the four-year history of the early-season showcase that Ohio State will participate. Overall, the Blue Demons have won six of seven all-time meetings between the programs.

Other matchups on the Gavitt Tipoff Games schedule include a national title game rematch between MI and Villanova on November 14 in Philadelphia along with Seton Hall playing at Nebraska and Marquette at in that day. Villanova and MI, the schools that battled for the national championship in San Antonio, Texas, will meet again on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Villanova.

Scheduled through 2022, the Gavitt Tipoff Games will be played on consecutive days in the first full week of the college basketball season. The teams last met in the 2001 Championship game of the Great Alaska Shootout with Marquette taking a 50-49 decision. The Huskers lost 87-63 at Villanova in 2015, and 79-56 at St. John's last season.

The Golden Eagles qualified for the NIT, where they lost to eventual champion Penn State, 85-80 in the quarterfinals.

Over the course of the eight year agreement, each Big Ten team will play in the event a minimum of four times and each Big East team will play a minimum of six times. Gavitt had a profound and lasting influence on the sport of basketball on the collegiate, professional and Olympic levels and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.

This will be IU's third confirmed non-conference game for next season along with a home game against Louisville on December 8 and a matchup with Butler in the Crossroads Classic at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on December 15.
