The Ohio university will adding Fortnite Battle Royale to its collegiate esports program in the fall of 2018. A smaller school like Ashland - which appears to focus on several sports programs - might actually do well to get in on that eSports money by offering young players - who make up the majority of eSports rosters - the chance to get an education while playing their favorite games.

Fortnite Battle Royale, which is a free last man standing style game, has millions of players. The news was announced by head coach Josh Buchananon on the school's website.

Ashland University is the first college to add Fortnite to its program. Fences will no longer prevent you from crafting, squad mates spawn closer to each other on the starting island, and the Port-a-Fort should be a bit more manageable to build and use for players, but these are just a couple of highlights among a host of tweaks made this week, all of which are laid out in Epic's detailed patch notes. We're excited to provide this platform for gamers who want to showcase their skills in a more competitive space. Fortnite facilitates an environment that allows players to get creative, innovate and show off their mastery of their skills. "There's a lot of teamwork in [the game's core building mechanic] that's really untapped", Buchanan said.

Eventually, Buchanan's hope is that collegiate leagues will be set up for official Fortnite competitions.

Ashland's esports team, which will begin competition next fall, will arrange four-player teams that practice regularly and compete together.

Ashland University of OH has announced that it's now offering scholarships to exceptional Fortnite players.

Plans for tryouts will come at a later date, but those with an interest in joining the team can fill out an online form.
