When reading President Donald Trump's weekend Twitter attacks on the New York Times' Maggie Haberman, The Late Show's Stephen Colbert pointed out that the president appears to once again be massaging the truth.

"He is abusive, according to nearly everyone I speak to, to most people in his orbit and family is not excepted from that".

Longtime Trump attorney Michael Cohen.

Earlier, he took aim at New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who reported Friday that it was a "strong possibility" Cohen would cooperate to save his own skin. It quoted Trump adviser Roger Stone saying, "Donald goes out of his way to treat [Cohen] like garbage".

He then displayed a photo of Haberman and Trump in the Oval Office.

"This is a topic ... that is one that is hitting a nerve with him".

Trump has been told previously that he is not a target of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe. "The president has destroyed their relationship pretty handily on his own over a very long period of time and that what is the story is about".

Short was apparently referring to special counsel Robert Mueller, whose office referred the case to the Southern District of NY which led to a raid earlier this month on Cohen's home, hotel room and office as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into his business dealings.

In the tweets, sent shortly after he arrived at one of his Florida golf courses, Trump accused the newspaper of using "non-existent "sources" in a Friday story about the relationship between Trump and Cohen, who has said he would "take a bullet" for his boss. That included records related to payments Cohen made in 2016 to adult film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, both of whom allege having had sexual encounters with Trump, people familiar with the raid have told The Associated Press.
