Lavrov was also quoted by according to RIA state news agency as saying that, prior to the U.S. strikes on Syrian targets, Russian Federation had told USA officials which areas of Syria represented "red lines" for Moscow, and the USA military action did not cross those lines.

"Speaking about the risk of a military confrontation, I feel absolutely confident to assume that the militaries will not allow this, and of course neither will President Putin or President Trump", Lavrov is quoted as saying in an interview with Sputnik news on Friday.

It comes as President Trump invited his Russian counterpart to the USA during a phone call, and said he would be glad to see Mr Putin in the White House, according the Russian foreign ministry.

Syrian forces used Soviet-era air defense systems and fired 112 surface-to-air missiles to repel the US -led strikes, destroying 71 out of the 103 missiles launched by the Western coalition last week, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Lavrov added that Russian Federation officials "dearly hope" a proposed meeting between Trump and North Korea strongman Kim Jong Un will "begin the process of de-escalation".

Trump, who has invited Putin to visit him in Washington, had directly warned Russian Federation to be prepared for the U.S. strikes on Syria in a post on his Twitter account.

A Russian official said Wednesday that the country's response to recent US sanctions would be "precise and painful", Reuters reported.

"President Putin is ready for such a meeting", Mr Lavrov said.

The US, Britain and other Western allies responded by expelling over 150 Russian diplomats, and Moscow, which has fervently denied the British accusations, responded in kind.

"That act of aggression has complicated many things, including the mandate which UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura has been responsible for upon an instruction of the UN Secretary General", he said.

The Pentagon said that all 105 missiles fired at three Syrian chemical facilities reached their targets, while the Russian military said Syrian air defences downed 71 out of 103 United States missiles. "But now we have no such moral obligation", the top Russian diplomat added.

He also noted that after the attack, Russian Federation is no longer bound to a moral duty to not supply Damascus with the S-3000 air defense missile system.
