Donaire lauds Frampton, plans to move down in weight

Frampton is set to meet either WBO champion Oscar Valdez or the victor of the clash between IBF title holder Lee Selby against Josh Warrington.

Despite Donaire hurting him in the later rounds, Frampton was in control for nearly the entire 12-round fight to eke out similar scores of 117-111 on all three judges' scorecards to win the World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight interim title.

While on paper you'd have to say the more competitive fight to watch this weekend is Nonito Donaire and Carl Frampton, it can not be denied that Khan is the biggest star fighting this weekend. On May 19, WBC World Champion Gary Russell Jr. will defend his belt against JoJo Diaz Jr. live on SHOWTIME and IBF World Champion Lee Selby will defend his 126-pound title against undefeated Josh Warrington live in the United Kingdom on SHOWTIME Sports social platforms. "I didn't have to get involved in fight", said Frampton, the former two-time world division champion.

"Boom Boom" insists the arrival of "The Jackal" to their team had given him a new lease of life and after four good rounds, it seemed Frampton was back to the form that saw him win world titles at super-bantamweight and featherweight.

He said: "It showed a different side to me".

"I don't want to be forgotten in 10 or 15 years". It was a masterclass at times.

"I just felt that I needed to survive, and just fought, and know from all of my experiences that no matter how tough the guy is in front of me, no matter how big, or strong, there was always something in me that was willing to fight and never give up". When it got close I needed to use my straighten which I did.

"There is not a man on this planet at featherweight who is going to beat me at Windsor Park". And that was it.

"I need to be fully focused on that; after that I can think to the future".

Today's fight represents Frampton's second with new trainer Jamie Moore and new promoter Frank Warren, who considers Donaire the finest fighter he has brought to the United Kingdom since Cuba's Guillermo Rigondeaux in 2016. It was the best camp I've ever had and the most scientific approach.
