LG G7 ThinQ will reportedly feature a Google Assistant button

The report would make the G7 ThinQ the first smartphone to feature a dedicated Google Assistant button.

The report, from CNet, quotes "people familiar with the smartphone", who say that the LG G7 ThinQ (gah, that name!) will have a dedicated button on the left hand side of the phone that will call the Google Assistant.

LG is going to unveil the upcoming flagship smartphone on May 2, and the new report would seem to line up with previous leaks of the handset. The power button is reportedly on the right, while the fingerprint reader remains on the back. The G7 will come with custom LG commands for the Assistant.

What do you think of the idea?

That would make the G7 the first ever phone to have such a button - not even Google's Pixel phones have it.

As with the Bixby button, the G7 ThinQ's Google Assistant button reportedly can not be reprogrammed to call up a different app.

Today a new report claims that won't be the case, and instead the new button is meant exclusively to provide access to the Google Assistant.

The remaining buttons will be the volume rocker above the Google Assistant button. Samsung has resisted changes to their Bixby button, playing an ongoing game of virtual whack-a-mole with developers who try to skirt the permanent mapping of Bixby to the button.

Regardless of the inability to reprogram it, the Google Assistant button stands to benefit Google as it pushes its virtual assistant to more people.
