'Murphy Brown' Revival Adds Tyne Daly

Tyne Daly has signed on to the cast of Murphy Brown, CBS' revival of the 1988 sitcom.

She will play bar owner Phillis, the sister of Phil, the bartender who is now deceased. When the revival kicks off, Phyllis has taken over her brother's bar, and is a friend and confidant to Murphy (Candice Bergen) and the gang. According to CBS, "it's evident that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree".

As previously announced, original cast members Faith Ford, Joe Regalbuto and Grant Shaud will reprise their roles, with Charles Kimbrough expected to return as a guest star. She joins two other new cast members: Jake McDorman (from CBS' adaptation of Limitless), who will portray Murphy's grown-up journalist son Avery and Nik Dodani (Netflix's Atypical), who will play a young social media director for the show's fictional newsmagazine FYI. Writer and executive producer Diane English will also return as showrunner. It is the only series to receive a score of 100 on Metacritic. Television. As its 30th anniversary approaches, MURPHY BROWN returns to a world of cable news, social media, fake news and a very different political and cultural climate. Daly won four Emmys for "Cagney & Lacey", a much-admired CBS drama. Coincidentally, CBS has also ordered a pilot for a reboot of "Cagney & Lacey" with Sarah Drew and Michelle Hurd taking over the title roles. Bergen won five Emmys and two Golden Globes for her portrayal of Brown. It has not been revealed whether the original stars will make appearances on the reboot.
