Irish country legend Big Tom McBride has died, aged 81

The Irish country singer Big Tom McBride has passed away at the age of 81.

Fianna Fáil TD for Roscommon-Galway Eugene Murphy said: "It's with great sadness I learn of the death of Tom McBride, affectionately known as Big Tom".

Singer Philomena Begley said she was shocked to hear of Tom McBride's passing, describing him as someone who would "light up a room".

The County Monaghan man had a career that spanned more than five decades.

They had a number of Irish chart hits including Old Log Cabin For Sale, Broken Marriage Vows and The Sunset Years Of Life.

Big Tom became a star in the 1960s having formed the Mainliners, later touring with the band for nearly two decades. "There's people who have a presence and big Tom had it in abundance when he walked in somewhere". "Country music is richer because of him, he has left so much behind", he said.

His wife Rose, who was also well known on the country music scene, died at the end of January. "His many unknown acts of kindness to people is [sic] not forgotten".
