Woolworths hit by nationwide technical outage

Shoppers began reporting on social media about 4.15pm that they'd been told an IT issue was affecting cash registers.

Trolleys abandoned at the Caneland Woolworths registers.

Social media posts have revealed shoppers are banked up in stores with their trolleys, unable to move.

A Daily Mercury reporter at the scene said services had just been restored and customers were once again flowing through the registers.

A woman named Rose, from Hoppers Crossing in Melbourne, told 3AW customers were offered lollies as they were asked to leave.

Stores temporarily closed in response to the outage.

Woolworth's haven't made a statement yet, but they are replying to tweets explaining that registers "are now back online in all of our stores".

"The registers are now coming back online in our stores".

It's the busiest time of the day for Woolworths, but stores around the country shut their doors on Monday afternoon after a nationwide technical issue completely halted sales. "We apologise for the inconvenience this caused our customers".

The supermarket giant has taken to Twitter to confirm the IT issue has since been resolved.
