Firing back at a sharply critical book by former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, President Donald Trump blasted him Friday as an "untruthful slime ball", saying, "It was my great honor to fire James Comey!". Comey said he told Trump "to be careful about that because it might create a narrative that we're investigating you personally". It would be something that ... is higher than all the normal fights about policy. Trump has denied any collusion. Comey compares his interactions with Trump to his days prosecuting organized crime leaders: "As I found myself thrust into the Trump orbit, I once again was having flashbacks to my earlier career as a prosecutor against the Mob".

"I started to tell him about the allegation was that he had been involved with prostitutes in a hotel in Moscow in 2013", Comey says in the clip. "I wish I wasn't saying it, but it's the truth".

Other things we learned: the Comey family ladies marched in the pink-hat, #resistance march following Trump's election; Comey drank red wine from a paper cup after learning he was sacked.

Trump and his aides have countered Comey's media blitz by attacking his handling of the probe into Clinton's emails.

When asked about his first impression of Trump, Comey said he was similar to how he "thought he looked on television". "I don't know", Comey said in the ABC News interview when asked whether Trump has been "compromised" by the Russians.

In his first televised interview since President Trump fired him past year, James Comey calls Trump "morally unfit to be President". For his part, Comey has said that nine or 10 months into the Clinton probe, he had a "clear picture" where it was going and it's common to draft statements before an investigation is complete.

President Donald Trump's Twitter tirade against former FBI Director James Comey continued apace Monday morning. "Impeachment, in a way, would short-circuit that".

Stephanopoulos also asked if he thought Russian Federation had "something" on the president. Lindsey Graham (R- S.C.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) who found transcripts in August showing that Comey had drafted a statement rejecting charges be filed against Clinton, about two months before Clinton ever spoke with FBI investigators.

But House Speaker Paul Ryan said Sunday that Comey was a man of integrity "as far as I know", while adding that "I don't know the guy".

Trump called Comey an "untruthful slime ball" and said it was his "great honor" to fire the veteran Justice Department prosecutor. The memoir will be released on Tuesday.

The comments come the morning after the airing of Comey's interview with ABC News, his first since being fired by Trump last May.

Comey said Trump was "of above average intelligence who's tracking conversations and knows what's going on". But he did not watch the entire program, the White House press secretary, Sarah Sanders, said. The book will officially be released next week. She asserted that Comey has "proven to be dishonest".

Hillary Clinton has suggested James Comey is partly to blame for the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

Last summer, Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley and Sen.

He said Trump "will stain everyone around him".

Trump fired Comey in May, an action that helped lead to the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

In the interview excerpt released Saturday, Comey said he did not remember "consciously thinking" about the election results as he chose to disclose that the FBI had reopened its investigation into candidate Clinton's email use. But he added that Comey "speaks from a deep ethical place, and he's saying some things that he thinks the country needs to say and needs to hear".

Former Attorney General Loretta Lynch pushed back against Comey's criticism in the book that, early in the Clinton email inquiry, she had instructed him to refer to it as a "matter" rather than an "investigation". Flynn has since pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia's ambassador and is now cooperating with the Mueller investigation.
