Sixers great, HOF guard Greer dies at 81

Former Syracuse Nats star and Basketball Hall of Famer Hal Greer is dead at age 81.

While playing for the Sixers, Greer solidified his place as one of the greatest basketball players ever as he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982.

"Hal was a fantastic ambassador for Marshall and a great basketball player", Marshall men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said.

According to ESPN, he was a ten-time All-Star who played with the Sixers for his whole 15-year career, who drafted him with the 13th pick of the 1958 draft.

"We extend our deepest condolences and send our love to the Greer family during this hard time", the Sixers said in a statement.

The West Virginia native was already an established player for the Syracuse Nationals when the franchise moved to Philadelphia and became the 76ers in 1963. He's also the 76ers' career leader in field goals, field goals attempted, games and minutes played. He had been named an 10 consecutive days from 1961 to 1970 and won the game's MVP at 1968 after he scored 21 points on 8-of-8 shooting, for example 1 9 at 1 quarter.

Greer was the first player to have his number retired by the 76ers organization when the team retired his No. 15 in 1976.

The Sixers will honor Greer before their playoff game against the Miami Heat on Monday night.
