NICK CANNON is "proud" of his ex-wife Mariah Carey for speaking publicly about her bipolar disorder diagnoses.

Carey shared the news with PEOPLE, admitting to being in denial about her 2001 diagnosis for years.

Mariah Carey is thanking fans for their "overwhelming" support after she recently revealed that she has been suffering from bipolar disorder for almost two decades. "It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn't do that anymore".

Carey says, "I got back to doing what I love - writing songs and making music". "I've been hard at work, feeling inspired by each of your stories and uplifted by your overwhelming support", she posted on Saturday, alongside a picture of herself at a photoshoot.

Miss "Songbird Supreme" is now working on a new album with Roc Nation, which will be the first since her 2014 album, Me.

The star said she was "irritable and in constant fear of letting people down" and that she later learned she was "experiencing a form of mania". She said that she first thought she was suffering with "normal insomnia" as she could not sleep and was "working and working and working". It's not making me feel too exhausted or sluggish or anything like that. Eventually I would just hit a wall. I'm hopeful we can get to a place where the stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone.

Carey, who is divorced from actor Nick Cannon and shares 6-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan with him, said she chose to go public now because she's "just in a really good place right now, where I'm comfortable discussing my struggles with bipolar II disorder".

Carey's interview is featured in the Friday edition of the magazine.
