Ian Somerhalder may be known well as the cocky lifeguard to LOST fans, but he's best known as The Vampire Diaries' Damon Salvatore. Ian Somerhalder will be playing the character of Dr. Luther Swann, whose best friend, Michael Fayne, contracts the virus and becomes a bloodthirsty vampire.

The series will see vampires and humans split into camps, as more people are infected with the disease. While Swann tries to understand what is happening, Fayne becomes the leader of the vampires.

Netflix has ordered V-Wars straight to series, with ten hour-long episodes set for production. V-Wars is produced by High Park in association with IDW. The order comes as another IDW property, the beloved Locke and Key, is awaiting word on a new home after Hulu's surprising pass on the pilot. "We are thrilled to partner with Netflix to bring the multifaceted world that Jonathan Maberry created to audiences worldwide".

IDW Entertainment is the worldwide distributor for V-Wars, excluding Canada.

Brad Turner (24) will direct and executive-produce, while 1-800-MISSING creators William Laurin and Glenn Davis will serve as showrunners.

There is now no expected release date for V-Wars, but it's highly likely that Netflix will release the entire first season at once, as the company does with most of its original programming. Despite multiple attempts to bring the series to both the big and small screen, IDW remains committed to finding the project a creative home.

In addition to starring in the series, Somerhalder is attached to direct. Somerhalder previously directed three episodes of The Vampire Diaries. He now has a pod deal with TVD producers Warner Bros.

The report did not mention when V-Wars is expected to be released on the streaming network.

Ian is no stranger to the Vampire world, having starred on The CW's The Vampire Diaries.
