Sheeran has previously appeared in Game of Thrones, Bridget Jones's Baby, The Bastard Executioner and Home and Away. Although the as-yet-untitled movie is a musical comedy, it's unclear whether Sheeran will be contributing one of his Caribbean-inflected songs to the soundtrack, or whether he'll be exclusively in an on-camera role.

Tentatively titled All You Need is Love, it is about a struggling musician who believes he is the only person who can remember the songs of the Beatles.

As a known fan of The Beatles, the 27-year-old hit-maker would be simply ideal for the role. He has performed Beatles tributes in the past, so it would be in his wheelhouse.

"Everything Ed touches turns to gold", an unnamed source close to production company Working Title told the tabloid newspaper.

'He is the biggest hit-maker on the planet.

Sheeran has also impressed Paul McCartney with his music. "If anyone can make a film about the Beatles songs even better musically, it's him'".

Right now, the plot for Boyle's musical comedy film is a closely-guarded secret, although Lily James (Baby Driver) is slated to star alongside Himesh Patel (from the British soap Eastenders) and Saturday Night Live stalwart Kate McKinnon.

As for whether Ed will be lending his musical genius to the movie's soundtrack, still remains to be seen.

Shooting will take place over the summer for a 2019 release.
